The
University of Colorado Health Sciences Center (UCHSC) and the
University of Colorado Hospital (UCH) are in the process of
an historic move from their current overcrowded location near
downtown Denver to the site of the decommissioned Fitzsimons
Army Medical Center in Aurora, Colorado. Backed by unprecedented
state and federal cooperation, the move represents more than
a physical relocation -- it offers room to grow in ways that
will benefit Colorado well into the 21st century.
Slated to take place by 2010, the initial phase of the move
to Fitzsimons is estimated to cost $1.3 billion, and will result
in a substantial increase in available space -- from 2.7 million
gross square feet on 46 acres at the current location to 3.4
million gross square feet on 217 acres at the new campus. An
additional 1.5 million gross square feet of space, mostly for
research, is slated for construction following the initial transition
period.
In 1995, when Fitzsimons was officially put on the Base Realignment
and Closure (BRAC) list, officials from UCHSC, UCH and the City
of Aurora presented an innovative proposal to the Department
of Defense in Washington, D.C. The proposal emphasized the benefits
of reusing the decommissioned base to build -- from the ground
up -- a world-class, academic health center, including state-of-the-art
healthcare facilities. In addition, the campus will be directly
adjacent to the Colorado Bioscience Park Aurora, providing opportunities
to take University research discoveries into the stream of commerce
at an accelerated rate, through affiliation with the biotech
companies located in the 160-acre research park.

An Overview of Fitzsimons
|
|
 |
|
Fitzsimons
is an ongoing development that will continue to
be in the shadows of construction cranes until Phase
I is complete in 2010. The former Army medical base
is being transformed into the premier medical and
research center in the Intermountain West and will
also become one of the top biomedical research campuses
in the nation.
Perhaps the only way to gauge the true scale of
this project is to view the model of the complete
217-acre development on display in the lobby of
the Anschutz Outpatient Pavillion. The model, while
not architecturally accurate, does map the locations
of future expansions and new buildings through the
use of massing models. |

Note: Due to the fact that Fitzsimons is an ongoing
development, DenverSkyscrapers.com is presenting the entire
campus as a "New Project" and will continue to do so until
completion. Therefore, many buildings which have already
been completed on the campus will be listed on this page
in addition to the new facilities under construction.
Also be aware that only the major components of this project
are listed on this website. |
