Nestled at the foot of the mountains 30 miles north-west of Denver, Boulder is among the country's most well-known centers of liberal thought. A reputation that given Colorado’s generally conservative nature has, in part, earned the city the nickname "The People’s Republic of Boulder". The other primary reason for this distinction can be found in Boulder’s policy towards growth. Determined to remain independent from the quickly expanding Denver metro region, Boulder allows very little total growth and no new construction on the edge of town at all. A greenbelt of city-owned open space ensures that any new growth in the Boulder area occurs miles from the city. This, of course, leads to more sprawl than would be generated if Boulder permitted additional growth in its center, as most new construction is pushed ever outward towards Broomfield. Unfortunately the regional and environmental effects of their policies are of little concern to those within the "Independent Republic".
Questionable policy aside Boulder does have Colorado's second most successful downtown and is home to much interesting architecture as well as a lively street life. Its high quality of life ensures that many people and companies would like to make Boulder their home, although growth control keeps prices up and limits space, forcing major office tenants and affordable housing elsewhere.
