Halfway between Boulder and Denver, Broomfield is highly affected by both cities. Due in no small part to growth restrictions in Boulder it’s exploded in both population and commerce over the last half decade. Interlocken Office Park now ranks among the largest office markets in the Denver area, and the FlatIron Crossing retail district has become one of the premier shopping districts in Colorado. Aggressive annexation policies in the 1990s created a troublesome situation for Broomfield, whereby the City occupied land in four different Counties (Boulder, Weld, Adams and Jefferson), because of this in late 2001 Broomfield became an independent City and County (like Denver, San Francisco or Baltimore).

As far as sprawling suburbs go Broomfield is one of the more interesting ones around. Although most development remains auto-oriented and urbanism is more or less unheard of, there is no problem with "cookie cutter" architecture. Visitors to Broomfield, especially the FlatIron Crossing area, will find many examples of interesting architecture and landscaping, and the vicinity gives off a definite feeling of excitement.
