Seat of Fremont County, Caņon City sits along the Arkansas River an hour west of Pueblo. In the Nineteenth Century both Boulder and Caņon City sought to grow by donating large tracts of land to the state government. Unfortunately for Caņon City, Boulder got the university and they got the prison. From that point forward prisons have been the cornerstone of the city economy. Today there are nine state prisons and a four-facility Federal penitentiary, together employing over 3,000 people.
Prisons aside, Caņon City is a popular tourist location. Downtown is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is the largest commercial historic district in Colorado. Royal Gorge, the canyon from which the city was named, is among the most impressive canyons in the Americas and is crossed by the highest suspension bridge in the world. The region is also among the most popular white water rafting locations in the United States.
