Sitting at the base of Pike's Peak approximately mid-way along the I-25 Corridor, Colorado Springs is the state’s second largest metro area and is among the country's most well-known centers of conservative and Christian thought. It is home to numerous national church headquarters, as well as the high-visibility group Focus on the Family. Colorado Springs is also one of the nation's most important military towns: home to the US Air Force Academy, Fort Carson, Schriever AFB, NORAD and Cheyenne Mountain.

Uncontrolled growth and a laissez-faire attitude regarding support for the inner city in The Springs has led to a well deserved reputation as the sprawl capitol of Colorado. That said, downtown is surprisingly pleasant and reasonably active for such a suburban city, and generally speaking there as much or more architectural diversity than in any other city in the state, with the obvious exception of Denver and the possible exception of Boulder.
