Sitting along the banks of Clear Creek just inside the foothills, Golden is one of the most historically significant cities in Colorado. Founded during the gold rush of 1859 the city served as capital of the Colorado Territory from its creation in 1861 until 1867, when the capitol was moved to Denver.

Today, though small, Golden remains an important city within the state. It is home to the Colorado School of Mines, a highly respected engineering college; Coors Brewery, the largest single point brewery in the world; the Jefferson County government; and maintains a substantial tourism base featuring an "Old West" theme.
