Located just west of Colorado Springs, Manitou was originally conceived as a European style spa town, and by the late 1870s it was beginning to live up to the spa town aspect, at least. It maintained that reputation until around the turn of the century when non-health oriented tourists began showing up in place of tuberculoses patients.
Tucked in a small valley, Manitou never had room to grow much beyond its original resort town function. As a result it still looks much like it did 100 years ago.
